4 U16 skiers headed to nationals

Nicolas Richeda was second in slalom at Friday's slalom race at the U16 Rocky/Central Regional Championships in Vail. Noah Riemenschneider and Marat Washburn tied for ninth.

— Four skiers from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s U16 Alpine team are headed to nationals.

Nicolas Richeda, Jack Reich, Noah Riemenschneider and Marat Washburn were among 11 boys to qualify at the Rocky/Central Regional Championships this week in Vail.

Four more Steamboat skiers came up just short and filled in the first four alternate spots for the team.

“We had a couple of guys right on the bubble,” coach Ben Brown said. “We had a really strong week, and I’m really proud of the whole team. It’s been a super-fun year.”

In the team’s last event in Vail, Richeda was second in a slalom race while Washburn and Riemenschneider tied for ninth.

“The team fought really hard all week,” Brown said.
