Sam Jones: Community wants clarity

To all of the members of the Local Marketing District: As you begin your campaign to renew the 0.25 percent airline sales tax, I think we, the community, would love some clarity and real data regarding the results of the past five years.

In today’s article about the potential renewal, I read about tax revenue collected, I read about the $1.163 million paid to the airlines and I read about an increase in the number of inbound seats.

The important information I think we all want to hear are whether or not there are butts in those expensive seats? After all, seats don’t buy meals, drinks and lodging — people do.

To be as specific as I can, please plan to include data regarding the change in actual air travelers associated with the increase in available seats. Are more airline seats yielding more air travelers? Can you quantify these results? We all look forward to your findings throughout the past five years.
