Battle Mountain’s big 1st beats Steamboat

Joel Reichenberger

— Another slow start sank the Steamboat Springs High School boys hockey team.

The Sailors found themselves down four goals after the first period on Tuesday night playing at Battle Mountain. The Huskies went on to win 7-1.

Battle Mountain got its first goal 3 minutes into the game and scored four more before Steamboat could respond.

Kearn Gerber got the Sailors on the board on a power play opportunity, putting away an assist from Jack McNamara early in the third period.

The Sailors did play a clean game, charged with just two penalties to Battle Mountain’s seven. They even shot as often as Battle Mountain, each team tallying 26 shots on goal. Steamboat couldn’t turn enough of those power play opportunities and shots into goals, however.

The team dropped to 1-12.
