Lisa Ciraldo: Parents’ voices needed

There seems to be a misconception that, since our schools are currently over capacity, the path has already been chosen to build an additional elementary school.

This is not the case. It is actually one of many options being analyzed, and in my opinion, is not going to be the solution.

We have an amazing opportunity to be an integral part of reshaping our school district, and therefore, our community. I am not a teacher, a principal, or even a school district employee. I have an equally important role in the education of our children — I am a parent, and my voice and ideas are needed, and so are yours.

I am raising my children in Steamboat and am a part of this community, because it is just that — a true community where everyone looks out and cares for one another.  When I heard that the school district was looking for community members to participate in the new master plan, I was overwhelmed with excitement.  What a chance to be involved in something great.

At last night’s first committee meetings, I was extremely surprised to see the low turnout, so I thought I would try and help get the word out in case anyone was not aware of this incredible opportunity.

Even if your children have graduated out of the district already, we can use your expertise as a “veteran” of the district to give your feedback as to what you think worked well and what could be improved. Perhaps there are members of the community that don’t have children, but have a skill set and knowledge that could offer valuable ideas and service.

These committees only take a few hours each month, and they are worth every minute of your time. I have just begun my service to this important process, but I wanted to take this opportunity and excitement I have to let everyone know they are wanted, and needed.

My only agenda here is for our children, all of them. They ARE our future. Let’s help shape it for them to make it even more bright and successful.

Please visit the home page of the SSSD website to see the description of the different committees. If you are unable to attend meetings, I urge everyone to frequent that site to stay up to date on the progress of the master plan.

Thank you!
