Vacation-minded Sailors cruise Friday

Joel Reichenberger

— A debate broke out on the sideline Friday night among several Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer players.

Did spring break start after school had ended, nearly five hours earlier in the day, or did it start after the horn finally sounded and their 5-1 win against Delta was complete?

Whatever answer they decided upon, and no matter how much they were looking forward to a week away from school, they maintained their focus enough to take care of business Friday against a winless Delta squad.

Junior Jordi Floyd led the way for Steamboat, scoring twice in the first half, including a dazzling dribble through the defense that she capped with a laser shot into the net for a 3-0 lead.

Mackenzie Gansmann had a goal in the first half and came through with a brilliant assist in the second half, serving one up for Eliza Leeson. Keelan Vargas scored, too, bouncing a corner kick off the Delta keeper for a score.

“We all stayed focused, even though spring break is starting right now,” senior Carolyn Walters said. “We connected really well through the game.”

Walters was one of those who managed to keep her mind in the game, but as soon as it was over, she was thinking of a beach.

A spring break trip to just such a place awaited her after the game.

The team won’t practice next week and doesn’t have another game until April 30, at home against non-league rival Moffat County.

The team is set in third place in the Western Slope with a 9-4-1 overall record, and will make the playoffs after it was left just outside last year.

That’s a big deal, Walters said, and it means all care can’t be left on that beach. Instead, there will need to be some jogging, maybe some yoga and plenty of thinking about soccer.

“It’s important for us to keep in shape and stay sharp,” she said. “We didn’t get in last year, so it’s a big deal for us, and we’re really proud of ourselves. We’ve been working really hard to get there.”
