Steamboat Pilot & Today launches 2014 reader survey

Lisa Schlichtman

— The Steamboat Pilot & Today is launching its 2014 reader survey Wednesday in an effort to gauge what readers think about the newspaper, its website and digital initiatives.

Readers are asked to go online to answer a number of questions, and the information gathered in the survey is used to help determine how the newspaper delivers its news and whether it is providing readers with news stories and content that are important to them.

The survey also helps the newspaper allocate reporting resources and guides decisions the management team makes when investing in new technology and resources.

“We want our print and digital editions to be a reflection of the community’s needs and desires for information,” Steamboat Pilot & Today Publisher Suzanne Schlicht said. “The feedback we get from our annual survey is valuable in providing this direction. I hope many community members will take 15 minutes or so to participate in the survey.”

In 2013, more than 600 individuals participated in the survey. Of those respondents, 32 percent of respondents picked up and read the print edition of Steamboat Today every day, and another 36 percent read the paper in print at least three to six times each week.

The most popular content, according to 2013 survey results, was local business stories, local crime, Happenings, News in Brief and local human interest stories. Other areas of interest were arts and entertainment coverage and outdoor features.

The survey also indicated that the number of readers accessing their news online also is increasing with more than 47 percent of 2013 survey respondents visiting SteamboatToday.com daily. Almost 40 percent of respondents said they keep up with local news through their desktop or laptop computers, and more than 17 percent rely on their mobile phones for access to breaking news.

Every respondent who completes this year’s reader survey will be emailed coupons for a free ice cream cone from McDonald’s and a medium drip coffee or $1.50 off any drink at Paddlewheel.

In addition, everyone who completes the survey will be entered to win three great prizes, including a Weber Spirit E-310 gas grill from Steamboat Ace Hardware, a $100 gift card to City Market and a $100 gift card to Safeway.

In order to participate in the survey, respondents will have to register by creating a username and password. The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete.
