Ladley, Gold make Dew Tour finals

Joel Reichenberger

— Matt Ladley made it easy while Taylor Gold made it dramatic.

Both Steamboat Springs half-pipe snowboarders qualified Thursday for the Dew Tour men’s half-pipe finals, set for Saturday in Breckenridge.

Ladley had his best recent result and that placed him near the top of the standings in the two-run qualification round. He was dialed in on his first attempt, scoring 81.75. That placed him third after the first run and he was only bumped down one spot on the second go-around, finishing fourth.

Gold, meanwhile, was able to maintain his momentum after dominating events late last season and winning his first big event of this season, last weekend’s U.S. Grand Prix at Copper Mountain.

He only barely pulled it out, though.

His best score after the first two runs was 66.25. That was good enough for 12th place. The top 10 finishers immediately advanced to finals, but the next 10, including Gold, got one more chance with a one-run, last-chance qualifier.

He took advantage. Fellow Olympian Danny Davis actually was 21st but got the chance to ride again when another snowboarder pulled out. Davis laid down a huge score of 91.75 to lock up one spot. Gold put together a big, clean run to take the second, scoring in at 87.75.

Louie Vito went last and fell just shy, logging a score of 86.75.

Ladley and Gold will join Arielle Gold, who qualified Wednesday for the women’s finals Saturday.
