Weekend’s shows are distinctive

Elissa Greene

Strings Music Festival officially gets underway this weekend with two exceptional openingshows today and Sunday. At first glance, these shows appear to be polar opposites.

Today’s artists are rising stars while Sunday’s guest soloist has been established in the classical music world for more than a half-century. Today’s program features music from the past six decades while Sunday’s concert includes

pieces from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Even though these two shows are quite distinctive, they both will be captivating and memorable.

The weekend starts tonight with a concert of crooners on our Different Tempo Series. Under the Streetlamp is a quartet of four young men, all of whom were leading cast members of the Tony award-winning musical “Jersey Boys.” Formed in Chicago in 2010, Under the Streetlamp quickly earned a local devoted following. Their program includes doo-wop, old time rock ’n’ roll and Motown soul while always featuring impeccable harmonies.

Sunday night features our Classical Series opening night with the Strings Festival Orchestra. The orchestra, conducted by Andrés Cárdenes, features legendary pianist Menahem Pressler performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto

No. 17 in G Major. Pressler was a founding member and pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio, and he is among the most distinguished and honored musicians in the world with a career spanning almost six decades. At age 89, he continues to teach at Indiana University, serve on competition juries and perform as a chamber musician and a soloist with the world’s most prestigious orchestras.

There are half-price classical tickets available at the box office for this and all classical shows. We hope to see you at

opening weekend!
