Late surge sinks Steamboat

Joel Reichenberger

The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team managed to answer Resurrection Christian twice on Friday night. It couldn’t continue to keep up as the game wore on, however, and it ended with the Sailors picking up their first loss of the season, 5-2, on the road against Resurrection Christian.

“We played well against a strong team tonight,” coach Brent Tollar said. “Our kids came in and played really hard, but they just got the best of us tonight.”

The Sailors fell behind 1-0 before getting a goal from Brendan Selby on a power play. They then trailed 2-1 before Bobby Elliott scored in the second period to tie things again.

Resurrection scored the final three goals of the game, however, bumping Steamboat’s record to 2-1 on the season.

“We had a couple of guys banged up, but some of our kids worked really hard to fill in those positions,” Tollar said. “There wasn’t any quit and the boys did a great job of trying to work though to the very end. The score didn’t really reflect the game. They got a couple of goals after we had spent everything to get back into the game.”

Steamboat’s back in action today on the road against Chatfield.
