Man shoots self in leg at Steamboat shooting range Friday

— A 62-year-old man is expected to be fine after shooting himself in the leg Friday.

Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters were called to the Routt County Rifle Club at 2:15 p.m. Friday.

Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Mark Mackey said the man reported shooting himself with a 9 mm handgun.

It was not clear how the man shot himself, and he was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center.

"Fine" just doesn't seem likely.

More people shoot themselves or a family member than they ever defend themselves. If I didn't need one for my bike jersey, I wouldn't have one at all.

I was at that range 3 years ago.
On the far south end of the firing line. (if I remember correctly the firing line runs north-south)
Went out to check my pattern and some idiot on the far north end of the firing line started shooting at their target.
I was out of immediate danger but Rule#2 is you never touch a gun when anyone else is down-range.

That was the last time I'll ever go there.
