VNA urges at-risk children and adults to get vaccines

Today is World Pneumonia Day, and the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is urging at-risk children and adults to get pneumonia and flu vaccines. According to the Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia, pneumonia is the No. 1 killer worldwide of children younger than 5 and is responsible for 18 percent of all child deaths.

Children aren’t the only ones affected by the disease, according to a release from the VNA. People considered at high risk for pneumonia include the elderly (65 and older), young children whose immune systems are not yet fully developed, and those with underlying health problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The pneumonia vaccine is available at all VNA drop-in flu clinics or by appointment at the VNA offices in Steamboat Springs and Craig. Call 970-879-1632 in Steamboat Springs or 970-824-8233 in Craig.

VNA is offering $14 adult immunizations, vaccine

Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering $14 adult immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella, HPV, chicken pox, pneumonia, meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and hepatitis A and B.

The VNA also is offering a vaccine for shingles. Adults ages 60 and older who are low income and uninsured may qualify to receive the vaccine for a $14 fee through the Merck Patient Vaccine Assistance Program. Apply for the program by scheduling an appointment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other leading medical groups recommend being vaccinated against meningitis for youths ages 11 to 18 as well as those ages 19 to 21 who attend college. College students younger than 22 who received a vaccine before age 16 should receive a booster.

To schedule an appointment, call 970-879-1632.
