Steamboat Springs — Another agricultural burn got out of control during the warm and breezy hours of Saturday afternoon in South Routt County.

Yampa Fire Protection District Chief Dan Allen said the burn started just after 3 p.m. on the south edge of Yampa at mile marker 41 of Colorado Highway 131. The fire got within about 50 feet of a gasoline bulk plant, but a crew of about eight firefighters, with the help of the Routt County Office Emergency Management and Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies, prevented the fire from reaching the gas tanks.

“It’s just high winds and people not thinking … they’ve got to use their heads,” Allen said.

The fire also jumped the highway, jumped the railroad tracks and spotted out into a hayfield, said Routt County Office of Emergency Management director Bob Struble.

One lane of Colorado Highway 131 was closed while crews fought the fire, which was spread out over several acres.

While onsite at the fire at 5 p.m., Struble said the blaze was fully contained.

There currently are no fire restrictions in place in Routt County. Struble said officials plan to meet during the week to discuss fire restrictions, which have to go through the Routt County Board of Commissioners.

Dry conditions and strong winds have prompted the Colorado State Forest Service and the U.S. Forest Service to suspend prescribed burns. Boulder, Arapahoe, Douglas, Eagle and Jefferson counties have enacted temporary fire bans.
