Steamboat’s Whitecotton bowls 821 series Monday

John F. Russell

— Steamboat Springs bowler Dewey Whitecotton understands what it takes to roll a perfect game, but he also understands that there are other milestones when it comes to the sport of bowling.

On Monday, Whitecotton rolled an 821 series during the Monday Mob League at Snow Bowl, marking only the third time the local bowler has knocked down more than 800 pins in the course of a three-game series.

“A series like that is more rare than a 300-game,” Whitecotton said. “I knew that I had something special going from my first ball to my last.”

Whitecotton, who has rolled 10 perfect games in his lifetime, led the series off with a 279. His second game was a 259, and he wrapped things up with a 283.

“I knew things were going my way Monday,” Whitecotton said. “But you never know how long things are going to last.”

Things went his way for all three games, and he was able to make the adjustments he needed to deal with the lane conditions as they changed.

Whitecotton said although the 821 series is near the top of his list of accomplishments, it isn’t his best series. Whitecotton rolled an 824 on the lanes at Snow Bowl a few years ago.
