The Steamboat Springs City Council could give a final OK to a revised version of the city’s false alarm ordinance during its meeting Tuesday.

City officials have previously told the council the current false alarm ordinance adopted in 2010 is a burden to enforce and needs to be retooled. The new ordinance would eliminate the escalating fine structure that currently charges building owners $100 for a second false alarm violation and $100 more for every subsequent violation. Under the revised version, a building owner who violates the ordinance more than six times in a year would be assessed a $500 fine on their seventh and all subsequent violations.

Council’s vote on the new code will follow a public hearing at Tuesday’s meeting, which starts at 5 p.m. in Centennial Hall, 124 10th St. The council voted, 5-0, on April 17 to pass a first reading of the revised ordinance.

Public comment is scheduled for 7 p.m.
