A week of near silence from Steamboat Springs High School’s spring sports teams will be broken in a big way beginning Monday.

The Sailors, who mostly went without a practice or competition through last week’s Spring Break, will be back in action starting with the boys lacrosse team’s trip Monday for a 6 p.m. showdown at Golden.

That squad and most others return to the courts and fields this week and quickly will be into season-defining playoff action.

“Usually, we have another week between the break and the regional tournament,” said girls tennis coach John Aragon, who will lead his team to Grand Junction to compete for its ninth consecutive regional championship starting Thursday.

The quick call to decisive action won’t be easy, he said, but he took heart in the way his team closed out action before the break.

“They played well in a Longmont tournament and they had been playing well in their last matches,” Aragon said. “If they come back from break and have that same intensity and same enthusiasm, if they’re out there working hard for points, they will do very well.”

The boys lacrosse team will begin Monday with what could be one of the more critical weeks of the program’s history. Steamboat will take a 13-1 record to a matchup against 6-9 Golden.

Looking sharp will be key for the Sailors as they do their best to secure a high spot in the playoffs, which begin Saturday. A first-round home game is likely, and being on point will be key as the team will be playing to win the program’s first playoff game.

“One of the reasons we scheduled this game (Monday) was to get back in the swing of things in a hurry,” coach Bob Hiester said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to get back and play our game and get the rust off the sticks.”

His instructions to his team, currently ranked No. 10 by the Denver Post, before the break were simple: Try to stretch and don’t do anything stupid.

His instructions when they take the field again Monday will be similarly to the point: Keep doing what you’ve been doing.

“We need to continue what we were doing,” he said. “Possession is a bing thing. We need to really watch our unforced errors, but we’ve done a pretty good job of that.

“This is the most complete lacrosse team we’ve had. ... No question about it, we have something to prove. We’ve shown ourselves to be able to play against Front Range teams, good caliber teams, but now we need to go into the second season and show we can play there.”
