Steamboat Springs As adventure races continue to gain in popularity, it was only a matter of time before one came to Steamboat Springs.
Steamboat Ski Area and NRC 365 will host the inaugural Steamboat Mad Mudder on July 7. The event will involve a 5-kilometer run from the base area up to and through the Mavericks Terrain Park and Bashor Bowl before returning to the base.
The course will feature a tire course, climbing wall, balance beam, mud pits and other surprise obstacles.
“We were kind of thinking about our summer event calendar and adding an event,” said Lee Smith, the promotions director for NRC 365. “We were looking at other places in Colorado and Denver, and everywhere has a mud run type of event. We figured this would be a perfect match.”
The event also should give the mountain a presence on a busy weekend that includes the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and Art in the Park.
The Mad Mudder begins at 11 a.m. with the first elite heat. Heats will go off every 30 minutes.
Registration is open at www.steamboatmudrun.com. The cost is $45 through April 15; $55 from April 16 to May 15; and $65 from May 16 to June 15. Preregistration is required. Entrance into the event includes an official shirt, a free beer and a sponsor bag.
The afterparty will be in Gondola Square and will feature two bands, beer and sponsor booths. Smith said the bands will be announced in the coming weeks.
There is no limit on the number of competitors, and Smith said organizers expect about 500 racers.
“This is something anybody can do,” she said. “Whether you go to the gym all the time or you’re just like, ‘Let’s do something fun that weekend.’”
She said construction of the course obstacles will begin in May.
