Steamboat Springs The 2011 Ride 4 Yellow and Ski 4 Yellow events in Steamboat Springs netted about $175,000 in proceeds, event founder Dave Nagel said Tuesday.
“I think we’re really happy with it,” Nagel said. “We really set the stage to have a sustainable event for years to come, and that’s what we’re after.”
Ride 4 Yellow put on its second annual mountain bike ride in August, and the inaugural Ski 4 Yellow event was in March at Steamboat Ski Area. After the event expenses are paid, the net proceeds are split between Livestrong, Lance Armstrong’s foundation, and local cancer causes. That means the local contribution from this year would be about $87,500.
In 2010, the inaugural Ride 4 Yellow event sold out. Helped by an appearance by Lance Armstrong, the event netted $266,000, with $133,000 staying in Routt County. About $33,000 was used to start an endowment fund, $9,000 went to the Andy Caress Melanoma Foundation, the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association received $20,000 for its Hospice and Palliative Care program and Yampa Valley Medical Center was given $71,000 for its cancer services programs.
A 4 Yellow foundation granting advisory committee includes representatives from sponsors, the events themselves and the medical field. The grants are administered by the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. Grant applications can be made from Dec. 1 through Feb. 28. People can visit www.yvcf.org for information about the application process.
Nagel said his goal for Steamboat’s 4 Yellow events is to have them consistently raise $100,000 for local cancer causes.
Nagel said preparations already are being made for the Ski 4 Yellow event scheduled for March 29 through April 1. For more information, visit www.ski4yellow.com.
