Hayden track team starts season

Hayden track team competes in Delta on Saturday

— The Hayden High School track team got its season started Saturday with a meet in Delta, and the Tigers emerged with a heap of top finishes.

“It went really well,” Hayden coach Richard Bush said. “For a young track team, we were really pleased with the outcome. There were a lot of big schools there, and some of our freshmen and sophomores did really well. That was cool.”

Hayden was led by senior Chris Zirkle, who placed second in the 1,600-meter run and was fourth in the 800.

Tigers senior Hayden Blake was fifth in the 300 hurdles and tied the school record in the event. He also was sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Brent Gabel was sixth in the long jump, and Dakota Zehner leapt to an eighth-place finish in the high jump. Both athletes recorded personal bests in the events. Blake and Jorge Valdez also both placed in the triple jump, though the final standings for the event weren’t available Sunday.

The Tigers return to action Saturday with a meet in Grand Junction.

“We’re excited about this next one,” Bush said. “It’s another big one. It’s tough for a Class 2A school to go to those, but it’s great for the kids. They’re competing with the best in the state, and that’s great.”
