Steamboat-based radio show adds airwaves

Hermacinski, Douglas see success with talk show

Mike Lawrence

— By early January, a Steamboat Springs-based talk radio show featuring the City Council president will have expanded to markets including Greeley, Montrose and Moab, Utah.

The Cari and Rob Show, hosted by Council President Cari Hermacinski and former Steamboat Pilot & Today columnist Rob Douglas, broadcasts out of a Yampa Street studio and can be heard locally on KRAI AM 550. The show is seeing significant growth as it enters its second year on the air.

KRAI, known as 55 Country, already provides airwaves reaching eastern Utah, southern Wyoming and the Interstate 70 corridor. Douglas announced this month that The Cari and Rob Show will add affiliate KUBC 580 AM, in Montrose, starting Dec. 20.

Starting Jan. 3, the show will add affiliates KCPX AM 1490, in Moab, Utah, and News Talk 1310-AM KFKA in Greeley. The Greeley station has a broadcast range extending south beyond the Denver metro area to beyond Cheyenne, Wyo., to the north.

Jamie White is producer of the show, which includes discussions about national and regional news, politics and current events along with listener call-ins and a variety of guests.

After starting in October 2009 as a weekly Saturday show, The Cari and Rob Show expanded to weekday mornings in April and added a third hour during summer, creating its current weekday slot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.

Hermacinski said owners of radio stations that have picked up The Cari and Rob Show appreciate its regional take on national issues.

“They like the fact that it’s a show that originates in flyover country, rather than New York or Washington, D.C.,” she said. “They like the idea that it’s coming from here in the Rocky Mountain region.”

Douglas has about 12 years of on-again, off-again talk radio experience, which he began in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore markets. He said the show’s growth has been beyond his expectations and gave significant credit to his co-host.

“I know that a number of the station owners that have taken us on … have said to me that Cari has been a tremendous attraction to them,” he said. “Cari comes across as very open and friendly. … (And) she has very, very good recall of information.”

Hermacinski and Douglas broadcast from a suite including offices and a studio in the Bear River Center above Cottonwood Grill.

Live streaming, audio recordings and podcasts of the show are available on the Web at http://www.cariandrob.info.
