Steamboat Springs — Campgrounds outside Yampa near Yamcolo and Stillwater reservoirs and the Flat Top Wilderness area are open and the reservoirs are ice free, but trails to nearby wilderness lakes are covered by 1 to 2 feet of snow in many cases.

Amy Oakes of the Yampa Ranger District of the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest said Tuesday that Bear Lake, Horseshoe and Stillwater campgrounds are open. She said she has heard from people who intended to set out on the trail system, including in the direction of the Devil’s Causeway, but has not received reports of what they experienced.

Oakes expects that hikers in the vicinity of the causeway will encounter snow.

“There typically is a huge snow field there before you ascend” to the exposed ridge that forms the causeway, she said.

The nightly fee in the campgrounds is $10, and the fee for dispersed camp sites in the area is $5. Campers in dispersed areas may drop their fee off in one of the envelopes provided at payment tubes both at the National Forest boundary or at the entrance to the formal campgrounds, Oakes said.

The camping area is reached via Routt County Road 7. The elevation is greater than 10,000 feet.
