Steamboat Springs It has become pretty apparent that when the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team doesn’t turn the ball over, it has a pretty good chance of winning.
But when it turns the ball over like it did Friday against Fossil Ridge — 24 times — there aren’t many times Steamboat will wind up victorious.
In a sloppy semifinal game of the Steamboat Springs Shoot-Out, Fossil Ridge’s full-court press was too much, and the Sabercats ran away with a 36-27 win.
“I think what we’re good at is being athletic and getting our hands on things,” Fossil Ridge coach Shannon Rand said. “That was our game plan, and once it started working, we were going to stick with what was working.”
It worked from the outset.
The Sabercats never trailed in the contest and overcame a poor shooting effort from the field. Fossil Ridge shot just 25 percent from the floor, but relied on its press to get easy baskets.
“We turned the ball over more in one half than we have in one game this season,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “It was a passive press. We forced the sideline and tried to do it ourselves. It blew up in our face.”
Fossil Ridge led 7-4 after one quarter and 15-11 at halftime.
Steamboat finally started to get something going at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters.
The Sailors got a bucket from Hannah Moore to end the third quarter down just 25-21, and a pair of free throws from Katie Lettunich to begin the fourth to cut the lead to 25-23.
But the Sabercats outscored the Sailors, 11-4, down the stretch to get the win.
“It’s the most disappointing we’ve played this year,” Lettunich said. “The third quarter we did some good things, but we just haven’t played a complete game this year.”
Tara Spitellie led the Sailors with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Steamboat next plays at 1:30 p.m. today against D’Evelyn.
