Steamboat Springs' search for a new city manager is progressing, with the City Council expected to offer the position to a leading candidate by the end of April.
The City Council this week set dates for final candidate interviews. The council, which has hiring and firing authority over the city manager, has been taking part in the search, which was spurred by the termination of former manager Paul Hughes' contract at the end of the past year.
Deputy City Manager Wendy DuBord is serving as interim city manager until a permanent replacement is found. DuBord said she is not a candidate for the job.
The search began in January, when the City Council hired the search firm Peckham & McKenney. The firm developed a brochure to advertise the position. The brochure states, "The City Council is seeking a visionary leader with strong ethics and integrity, as well as solid management and organizational skills."
Applications are due March 17, after which Phil McKenney will review the field of candidates and narrow the pool to about 10 to 12 semifinalists. On April 11, council members will review informational notebooks from each semifinalist. The notebooks will include resumes, reference letters and completed surveys. McKenney will be on hand to discuss each candidate and answer council members' questions.
The council is expected to select six to eight finalists based on their notebooks. Those finalists will be invited to come to Steamboat on April 20 and 21. The candidates will take tours of the city, meet the city's management team and interview with the city manager search committee, which will be made up of six residents.
About fifteen residents applied to be on the search committee, which will consist of one member from each of the following categories: community member at-large; recreation; environmental and historic preservation; health and human services; community business leader; and city employee. The City Council will select committee members based on their applications. The primary duty of the search committee is to make recommendations to the City Council after interviews with the finalists.
During their second day in Steamboat, the finalists will interview with City Council members.
During their January retreat, council members said the ideal city manager is someone who can handle growth and issues related to second-home owners and who has experience with Main Street programs and workforce housing issues. Progressive thinking also was mentioned as an ideal characteristic.
