Coaches host volleyball camp

Free five-day program for middle-schoolers includes fundamentals training

Steamboat Springs Middle School coaches are hosting a volleyball camp to prepare their players for the fall season.

"Every time school starts, we have six or seven practices before our first game, and some of our sixth-graders have never played before," eighth-grade coach Meg Firestone said. "We are going to go over serving, passing, fundamentals."

The camp is free and open to incoming seventh- and eighth-graders. The camp runs from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday at the middle school gym in Strawberry Park.

Firestone said it will be an informal and fun camp.

"They don't have to come every day," Firestone said. "I'd love as many as we can get."

Players don't need to register, and they can just show up whenever they want. The idea is to allow players to get on a gym floor earlier than one week before the fall season begins. The coaches had time in their schedules this summer, so they are excited for the camp, Firestone said.

Players need to wear a T-shirt, shorts and good gym shoes.
