Steamboat Springs Want to have a say in who becomes the next city manager?
You may have your chance. The city is looking for applicants to join the City Manager Search Community Committee.
The former city manager, Paul Hughes, worked his last day Dec. 31. Deputy City Manager Wendy DuBord is serving as the interim city manager. The City Council has hired consulting firm Peckham & McKenney to help conduct the search for Steamboat's next manager.
As a part of the search, six community members will be selected to serve on a committee that will review the candidates and conduct interviews.
The members will be selected from six interest areas of the community. Those areas are:
Community member at-large. This position will go to someone who has no vested interest in the other areas.
Recreation community. This could include a Nordic Council representative, a kayaker, a skateboarder or someone with another similar interest.
Environmental health and historical preservation community. Examples are the Community Alliance of the Yampa Valley and the Yampa Valley Land Trust.
Health and human services. Groups that may be represented include Grand Futures and Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Community business leader. Examples are Main Street Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Springs Arts Council.
One person from each category will be selected. Those who are picked should expect to meet for as long as a couple of months in the spring, including an intensive week or two with interviews of six to eight candidates, DuBord said.
The consultant also will interview representatives from other organizations within the community. Those organizations are: Routt County government, Steamboat Springs School District, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, Yampa Valley Housing Auth--ority and Yampa Valley Trades Association.
The search process is in the beginning stages. Consultants are working to develop a brochure profiling Steamboat and its ideal city manager. The firm will advertise the position with an expected closing date for applications in March. The consultants will narrow down the candidates for the City Council and search committee members to review.
