Man suspected of exposing himself

— A 24-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of showing his genitals to people standing on a hotel balcony.

Benjamin Lee Sande of Steamboat Springs was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday after officers said they watched him expose himself to people at the Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel, police Capt. Joel Rae said.

Rae said officers first contacted Sande on Mount Werner Circle because he was standing alone and wearing only a soaked T-shirt and jeans.

Rae said Sande refused to tell officers why he was wet. He also refused to tell officers his name.

Rae said officers followed Sande and that eventually they watched him engage in a conversation with some "hecklers" standing on a balcony.

Sande and the hotel occupants began to argue, Rae said, and it was during the argument that Sande took off his pants, raised his arms to make an obscene gesture and exposed himself. Rae said Sande told officers, "(The residents) made me do it."

Sande was arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure, a Class 1 misdemeanor. He was taken to Routt County Jail, where he later posted $1,500 bond.

Sande is scheduled to appear in Routt County Court at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 31.
