Steamboat Springs With limited experience and a more limited schedule, Steamboat Springs Middle School's seventh-grade basketball team feels as if it's playing catch-up.
"It's a challenge, because we typically have one week of practice before Christmas and then one week before we get into our games," coach Gary Lyons said. "The kids improved significantly throughout the season. It's always a challenge for us because there are so many other things to do in Steamboat."
The middle school season extends through the heart of ski season, so Lyons was especially proud of the 19 seventh-graders on the roster.
Kelly Kaminski and Mack Spitellie were assistant coaches.
Steamboat finished third in its league, which consists of teams in Northwest Colorado.
"We do fundamentals like shooting, passing, dribbling and defense," Lyons said. "As soon as we can, we get into game situations so they can become familiar with them."
The team learned how to run different offenses against man and zone defenses and was able to execute plays as the season progressed.
"I anticipate strong things from this group when they get into high school," Lyons said. "The eighth-graders and sixth-graders are strong, too."
