Steamboat Springs resident Jane Arigo passed away Nov. 4, 2205. She was 57.
Jane was born March 24, 1948.
She moved to Steamboat 11 years ago with her husband, Blase Arigo, from Lodi, N.J., where she taught kindergarten for 25 years.
Jane was a graduate of William Patterson College and received her master's degree in early childhood education.
When Jane first arrived in Steamboat, she worked as a substitute teacher for the Steamboat Springs School District.
In 2000, she started Mountain Sunrise, a small business that sold jams, jellies and specialty Italian cookies to a few stores across town.
Jane was involved with breast cancer programs in Steam--boat, having been a breast cancer survivor for 16 years and dealing with the disease up close. The employees of the chemotherapy unit of Yampa Valley Medical Center referred her to as the "chemo patient extraordinaire."
An avid skier, Jane averaged 20 to 25 days a year on her beloved Mount Werner, her dream come true. She also served on the Ski Patrol as an auxiliary at the Vernon Valley/Great Gorge Ski Area in Vernon, N.J.
When someone who hadn't seen her for a while saw her skiing down Rolex, he or she approached Jane on the mountain and told her how good she looked and asked when she finished her chemo. She would respond with a great big "Jane smile" and say, "I had a treatment yesterday."
In amazement, we all saw Jane as a pillar of strength with a zest for life. Jane just wouldn't have it any other way.
Jane is missed by all. A memorial service will be held for Jane in January, and the time and date will be printed in the Steamboat Pilot &Today.
Memorial donations can be made to the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project, Attn: Jan Fritz at 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487.
