Hayden man, 22, arrested
on charges of DUI, theft
A 22-year-old Hayden man was arrested last week after he allegedly stole a man's vehicle and drove it off the road.
Darby Ray Duncan was arrested Thursday morning on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a revoked license, DUI per se and aggravated motor vehicle theft.
Routt County Sheriff John Warner said a man reported his pickup missing about 9 a.m. Thursday on Routt County Road 76 just outside Hayden. The vehicle was recovered shortly afterward on the same road, apparently abandoned after the person driving it slid off the road. The vehicle was not damaged, Warner said.
Nearby residents called the sheriff's office to report that a man had skidded off the side of the road the night before and then walked away from the vehicle. The callers identified the man as Duncan.
On Thursday morning, the Hayden Police Department arrested Duncan, who Warner said was intoxicated.
When arrested, Duncan told law enforcement he was just playing a trick on the owner of the truck, Warner said. But, Warner said, the owner claimed he did not know the man and wanted to press charges.
Duncan bonded out of jail Friday afternoon on a personal recognizance bond.
