The Steamboat Springs Rotary Club recently named Bailey Draper, a senior at Steamboat Springs High School, its January student of the month.

Academically, Draper ranks in the top 5 percent of her class and maintains an A average. She is passionate about learning, and -- even though she's a senior -- is enrolled in eight classes, including three advanced-placement courses and one honors class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was the University of Colorado's Junior of the Year.

Draper has played on the school's basketball team for four seasons, including three on varsity. She is active in the school's peer mediation program, Advocates Against Battering and Abuse, the National Honor Society and she tutors students in math.

"Bailey thrives on hard work," teacher Tom Fitzgerald said. "She balances a demanding academic schedule with a full load of extracurricular (activities). She leads by the example of her own high standards and the effort she shows in achieving her lofty goals."

Steamboat Optimists

recognize Andrew

The Steamboat Springs Optimist Club named Steamboat Springs High School senior Joey Andrew its February teen of the month.

The Optimist Club salutes a Routt County teen each month of the school year for his or her contributions to schools and the community.

Andrew helped start the school's honor code, serves on its Honor Council, is a photographer for the school's newspaper, the Periscope, and joined the yearbook staff this year. Andrew is an accomplished photographer with his own business.

He is the historian for and two-year member of the school's chapter of the National Art Honor Society, and he has worked with state legislative representatives as part of his Senior Experience class. He also studies modern literature and writing and advanced art. His photography graces many corridors and walls in the high school.

Andrew has worked at Lyon's Corner Drug and Soda Fountain, Ed's Excavating and Raindrop Water.
