Richard Albert Mills (1948-2004)

Steamboat Springs resident Richard Albert Mills passed away Jan. 20, 2004, at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 55.

Richard was born Aug. 16, 1948, in Herkimer, N.Y., to George and Ina Mills. He grew up in Herkimer and graduated from Herkimer High School in 1966. After high school, he served his country in the U.S. Navy for two years. He was married to Bonnie Martinez on Sept. 23, 1972, in Lincoln, Neb.

He moved to Denver after his service in the Navy. In 1986, he moved to Steamboat, where he worked at RAG Twenty Mile Coal Mine.

Rick was a member of the Yampa Valley Fly Fishers. Hobbies he enjoyed include hockey, fly fishing, skiing, hunting, golfing, mountain biking, cooking and coaching the Chix with Stix.

He is survived by his son, Ryan Mills, and daughter, Erica Mills, both of Steamboat Springs; brothers Robert Mills of Fremont, Ohio, and Donald Mill of Albany, N.Y.; sisters Marilyn Foley of Rome, N.Y., and Jackie Blais of Herkimer, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Donna Elwood and Carolyn Ferrucci.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Depot Art Center in Steamboat Springs with Father David Henderson officiating. Friends may donate to the American Cancer Society in care of the Yampa Valley Funeral Home, 2095 Curve Court, P.O. Box 776090, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
