Hayden falls to Soroco

Final seconds make the

Sloppy play from the Hayden Tigers and Soroco Rams girls squads made for an interesting finish in the final seconds.

With just more than a minute remaining, the Rams were up two points. Soroco's Paige Iacovetto was fouled and shot two, but missed them both, but she got her own rebound and was fouled again. She made one of the two free throws, putting the Tigers three points back.

Hayden's top scorer for the night with 10 points, Lauren Branstetter brought the ball up court and hoisted up a 3-pointer. She missed, but a late whistle revealed she was fouled. She made two of three, and it was a one-point ballgame.

In the final seconds, Iacovetto was fouled yet again and made both foul shots in the clutch.

With the loss, the Tigers fall to 1-6, with no league games played yet.

"A lot of the games we play have come close," Hayden coach Jayme Adams said. "The girls never give up, but it seems we begin to force shots in the fourth quarter."

The Tigers got off to a slow start as well, taking 3 1/2 minutes to score the first basket.

While the Rams got off to a good start, scoring eight quick points and moving the ball smoothly, their play got sloppier as the game progressed.

"We had some trouble passing," Rams coach Bob Johnson said. "You work on it so much, you have to think it's just in their minds. Also, they stare where they're going to pass at, so the other team knows exactly where it's going."

Hayden's passing was similar, however. What kept both teams in contention for the victory was a solid defense.

Soroco's team leaders were Kaleyne Gneiser with 10 points, Iacovetto with 9 points and Hallie Shiner with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.

Leaders for the Tigers were Branstetter, Mariah Doolin with 7 points and Jamie Waugh with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The Soroco girls lost to Grand Valley, 45-30, on Jan. 9, making their record for the season 4-4, 0-2.
