Wrestlers slap their heads, rub their arms and bounce from one foot to the other, eagerly awaiting their first matches. Soroco's Matt Iacovetto yawns.
"The first match is always one I take my time on," Iacovetto said. "I just take it easy. I don't want to show all of my moves."
Iacovetto was the first Soroco Ram to wrestle in the Class 2A Region 1 Wrestling Tournament at Grand Junction High School on Friday, and he was the only one on the team to wrestle twice Friday. He won his first match, pinning Jeff Gallob of Norwood in the second period. He then won his second match with an 8-4 score over Nevada Smith of Nucla.
"So far, so good," Iacovetto said. When asked how he felt about his confidence based on his opponents Friday, he said: "If I wrestle good tomorrow, I should place well in state."
He is in good shape, indeed. Iacovetto's two victories mean that he can lose twice today and still place in the regionals and move on to state competition.
Soroco's Whit Gates also won Friday. He pinned Leroy Shaffer of Norwood in the second period of his only match.
Some Soroco Rams were not so fortunate. Marc Bell lost to Brandon Morris of Nucla, and Joe Crawford lost to Wade Henderson of Norwood.
Wrestlers who lost Friday will have to fight hard today to avoid losing their first matches. Losing the first two matches means elimination from the tournament.
