Mike Skov announced Thursday his intention to withdraw from the Steamboat Springs School Board race.
Skov, who must present to the school district a signed letter detailing his intentions before his withdrawal is official, cited the time commitment necessary to be an effective School Board member as the reason behind his decision.
"My wife, Danielle, and I came to the realization that we underestimated the time commitment necessary to be an effective School Board member, and we overestimated our ability to handle that commitment," Skov said in an e-mail Thursday.
Skov, who was to oppose Michael Loomis for the Director District 5 School Board seat on the Nov. 4 ballot, informed Loomis of his decision Thursday.
Loomis is a well-qualified candidate who will be a strong fit for the School Board, Skov said.
"This decision was made easier by the strength of Loomis' candidacy. He is passionate, talented, knowledgeable and will serve the community well," Skov said.
Skov and his wife attended Wednesday's First Impressions of Routt County candidates' forum with their infant child, born earlier this month. The Skovs have two other children, the eldest who is in kindergartn.
Skov expressed a desire to be involved in the district in other capacities, such as through a position on the Education Fund Board or one of its commissions.
Loomis, who is a virtual lock to be elected to the School Board, said he was looking forward to a contested election.
"I was definitely happy to have a contested election," Loomis said Thursday. "But I understand (Skov's) decision. I know I wouldn't be able to handle it if I was in his shoes."
Nonetheless, Loomis is excited for his future duties on the School Board. "It's kind of a daunting task ahead," Loomis said. "I'm definitely excited about being able to serve on the board."
Skov's announcement decreases the number of contested School Board races from three to two. Jerry Kozatch and Robin Crossan oppose incumbent Pat Gleason for the Director District 4 seat. Jeff Troeger and Brian Kelly will face-off for the Director District 2 seat.
