Wisconsin hunter shoots himself in hand

A 40-year-old Wisconsin hunter had to be taken to the hospital Saturday after shooting himself in the hand.

The man was hunting near the Muddy Creek Campground on Rabbit Ears Pass. The Grand County Sheriff's Office is in charge of the case and would not release the name.

Routt County Sheriff John Warner, whose office investigated the incident, said the man was reloading his rifle with black powder.

The hunter had just shot at an elk and was shoving a ramrod down the rifle when it fired, shooting a ball through his hand.

The muzzle blast codified the blood vessels in his hand and bleeding was limited, Warner said. The hunter was treated at Yampa Valley Medical Center and released. Another hunter brought him to the hospital.
