Sailors wrap up home season

This season hasn't been about records for coach Wendy Hall. What Hall wants from her Steamboat Springs volleyball team is a high level of play, especially in the final home matches of the year.

When Steamboat faced Delta and Palisade in early September, the Sailors came away with two straight-set victories, but they weren't pleased with how they won.

"I thought we were inconsistent the first time and had periods throughout the match where we would give up six, seven, eight straight points," Hall said. "We spent the next week before the Glenwood match working on that and did better. I'm hoping we show up a little bit stronger this time."

Steamboat (12-3 overall, 7-1 league) will conclude the home portion of the regular season this weekend, beginning at 6:30 p.m. today against Palisade. Steamboat then hosts Delta at 1 p.m. Saturday, marking the final home match for seniors Shelley Dunlop, Hannah Gary, Brynn Gotchey and Katie Liefer.

If the Sailors earn a trip to the state tournament later this month, they will have a total of five weeks left in their season.

"I'm trying to remind them that they are looking at five weeks left, and even if they get that, it's not that much," Hall said. "Every day has to count, and that's how you have to approach every practice from here on out. We're trying to push endurance again, and we've been boosting our training the last couple of weeks."

Steamboat has four league matches remaining this season and, if it beats Palisade and Delta, could tie Glenwood Springs for the league title, assuming the undefeated Demons avoid an upset.

The Sailors and Demons play Oct. 16 in Glenwood Springs.

"That's what we've been talking about," Hall said. "If we beat everyone else, we'll put ourselves in a position to tie it up."
