Though no Steamboat Springs tennis player came away with a championship, the five that participated in the Intermountain 12-and-under Memorial Day Championships gained valuable experience.

Lisa Floyd, Jordy Bernard, Kirsten Brehmer, Alexandra Leatu and Jamey Swiggart all took part in the tournament, which welcomed many of the top young players from the six-state Intermountain Region to the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs over the holiday weekend.

Idaho, Utah and Colorado were represented at the four-day event that concluded Monday.

Casey MacMaster of Fort Collins and Katie MacIntyre of Superior came out victorious, upsetting top seeds in the boys and girls draws, respectively.

MacMaster is ranked third in the Intermountain Region. MacIntyre is ranked fourth.

Their opponents held top rankings in the region.

Floyd was the only Steamboat player who entered with a seed. After being upset Friday, she came back over the weekend, winning a match Saturday and defeating Golden's Emily Adney, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.

In Monday's consolations, Greeley's Mattison Sperry handed Floyd a 6-2, 6-1 defeat.

Bernard also fell in Monday's consolations after winning matches Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, Bernard beat Matt Sweet of Salt Lake City 6-3, 6-4.

No. 8 seed Ross Morrell of Boise defeated Bernard on Monday, however, 6-4, 6-0.

Leatu picked up a pair of wins Sunday and Monday.

She defeated Caitlyn Shafner of Englewood 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday and beat Englewood's Blythe Olson on Monday 6-1, 6-3.

Steamboat's youngest participant, Jamey Swiggart, 8, and Kirsten Brehmer, in her first tournament at 11, were the only local players who did not win a match in the four-day tournament.

On Sunday, Tai Mayes of Loveland defeated Brehmer 6-3, 6-2, while Greeley's Joseph Aragon defeated Swiggart 7-5, 6-2.

Swiggart, Leatu and Bernard were nominated for the Sportsmanship Award presented at the conclusion of the tournament.

Kelsey Brading received the honor on the girls' side, while Bernard picked up the award on the boys' side.
