Steamboat Springs Multiple charges have been filed against nine middle school boys who allegedly behaved inappropriately toward a girl last fall at Steamboat Springs Middle School.
The boys are facing charges of unlawful sexual contact, false imprisonment, criminal mischief and intimidating a witness, Routt County Sheriff John Warner said.
Warner said the boys are not all facing the same charges.
"It's pretty strung out amongst the nine," he said.
The 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office is handling the case, but the Sheriff's Office investigated the incident because the middle school lies within the county's jurisdiction.
The false imprisonment charge relates to the suspects allegedly grabbing the victim and telling her they would beat her up if she said anything, Warner said.
"It's holding someone against their will," he said.
Criminal mischief charges were filed because some of the victim's personal property was damaged in the incident, Warner said.
A friend of the girl alerted a middle school counselor to the incident and the information was forwarded to school officials.
The students' parents were involved in the interview process. The students and the parents were cooperative, Warner said.
A restraining order is in place against the boys, he said.
School district officials stressed shortly after the incident was reported they didn't want to rush to judgment until they had all the facts.
