Local gasoline 25 cents over statewide average

Gasoline prices in Steamboat were more than 25 cents above the statewide average this week, but they weren't the highest in the state. Unleaded regular was priced between $1.72 and $1.75 a gallon here.

Colorado's average retail gas price jumped 3.7 cents this week, as the state's average for regular, self-serve, unleaded gasoline increased to $1.50.6 cents per gallon, according to AAA Colorado's Weekly Gas Price Survey. The national average for unleaded gasoline increased 5.8 cents to $1.53.7 cents from $1.47.9 cents per gallon.

The nationwide price for gasoline is up 7.5 cents compared to one month ago and is running 41 cents more than a year ago.

Colorado's average is up 2.2 cents from one month ago and is 37.4 cents more than last year. Colorado's statewide average is running 0.9 cents less than this time in January 2001.

Of the cities reporting gas prices were up: Vail and Grand Junction led the reported increases of 7.9 and 6.2 cents, respectively. Vail's gas price average, while not the highest in the state, is the highest price of those cities included in the survey at $1.84.4.

Local tourism goes back to 19th century

Carol Bastow of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association may have found one of the earliest references to tourism in Steamboat Springs.

While researching the history of the rodeo for a news release, Bastow found a Steamboat Pilot newspaper clipping from Sept. 19, 1898. It described "Game Day," which included rodeo events, a dance, shooting competitions, pony races, foot races and hunting. Here's what the article said about the 3,000 visitors the festivities drew:

"It was the first experience for this town in caring for and amusing several thousand visitors. Beginning the first week, the town began to fill up with visitors in all kinds of vehicles, from made-to-order camp wagons of aristocratic tourists to carts and even all sorts of vehicles. One man even came on foot from east of the range pushing a two-wheeled cart with his bedding and camp outfit ...

"By Thursday there were more tents than houses in Steamboat."
