Chix with Stix head out for Front Range road trip

— Since returning from a month-long break, the Steamboat Chix with Stix women's hockey team has gone 1-1-1 on the team's home ice.

This weekend the local team will venture out on the road during a Front Range road trip that will pit the local players against squads from the University of Colorado in Boulder and the Left Hand Brewery Brewsers in Westminster.

The Chix are coming off a three-game run that has left them with just one win. That victory came at the Howelsen Ice Arena Jan. 13 when the local women posted a 2-1 victory over the Summit County Snowcats.

Two goals by Shelia Henderson gave the Steamboat team the edge they needed to win the game. Karen Post and Val Dietrich both had assists in the contest, and with the exception of a second-period goal, the Steamboat defense stopped a total of 11 shots on goal.

On Jan. 19, the Chix returned to action with a pair of games against the Aspen Motherpuckers.

Aspen came out strong in the fist game, netting a goal less than a minute into the contest and then added two more (one on an empty net) to win the game 3-0.

The same two teams faced off Jan. 20. This time it was the Chix taking the upper hand with two first-period goals that left the local team with a 2-1 advantage. Dietrich scored the first goal of the game assisted by Cathy Wiedemer.

The Chix's second goal came with 42 seconds left in the period, when center Heidi Chapman netted a goal. Post and Kit Rice assisted her.

Aspen got on the board with less than five seconds left in the game.

The Motherpuckers then evened the score with a goal late in the third period.
