Steamboat Springs American Bill Demong won his first Nordic Combined World Cup Sunday in Liberec, Czech Republic, holding off Czech Pavel Churavy by 2 seconds. World Cup leader Felix Gottwald of Austria took third. This marks the second time an American has won a World Cup this season.
After sitting in the second position in Saturday's first round of jumping with a 120-meter jump, Demong dropped to fourth with a 104-meter final jump. At 209.3 points, he started 1:11 behind German Thorsten Schmitt in the ski race. Right behind him in the start of the race was Gottwald, who was fifth in jumping, according to the U.S. Ski Team Web site.
Johnny Spillane was 11th and Kris Erichsen was 12th after the race Sunday.
U.S. skiers are returning to the United States where the Olympic team is expected to be named Tuesday.
