Panthers pounce on Sailors

— The Steamboat Sailors girls soccer team dropped their first game of the season Friday, falling to the Boulder Panthers, 2-1, at Boulder.

The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime and scored again about 15 minutes into the second half.

Liz Masterson scored from 30 yards out with about 10 minutes to go to bring Steamboat back to within one.

But the Sailors were held scoreless the rest of the way and lost for the first time in four games.

Steamboat coach Jim Dudley said he was proud of his team's effort. The Sailors, who compete in the 4A Class, played a Panther team that competes in 5A.

Players with strong performances, Dudley said, were Jessica Johnson, Lia Utu, Cassidy Kurtz and Jessica Fritz.

"I think maybe our team was a little intimidated there," Dudley said. "But we played with them the whole game. When we got our goal we were beginning to play against them well."

Steamboat is now 2-1-1 on the season and has posted wins over Grand Junction Central and Standley Lake.

Steamboat tied Littleton.

The Sailors open league play against the Glenwood Springs Demons Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Glenwood. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m.
