Ski jumpers hold top spots

— Even in warm weather, the local ski jumpers who competed in the Western Regional Championships this past weekend landed in a number of top spots.

"I thought we struggled with the weather because of the spring-like conditions," said Todd Wilson, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club nordic director.

"But I was real proud of the Steamboat kids and their focus and their ability to adapt to the changing conditions."

The special jumping events, which took place at Howelsen Hill, featured three teams, including Steamboat, Winter Park and a team from Park City, Utah.

There were six classes of competitors, starting with the J6 class and concluding with the J1.

Logan Gerber compiled 237.0 points to take first place in the J1 men's event, which was the K90. Ethan Johnson and Adam Schwall rounded out the top five and Bryan Fletcher was sixth.

Johnson and Fletcher also took part in the J2 jump, which was the K-60. Johnson placed fifth and Fletcher was sixth.

In the J3 division, Andy Garber scored 198.3 points to finish tied for second with Park City's Chris Francis in the K38.

Anders Johnson of Park City finished No. 1 with 206.1 points. Andreas Aalbu was fourth in the K38.

Aalbu and Taylor Fletcher tied for the No. 2 spots in the K25, which was the J4 competition.

Anders Johnson was the No. 1 finisher in the K25 with 240.5 points. Aalbu and Fletcher each totaled 209.5 points.

Charlie Stoddard was the No. 1 placer in the J5 event and Cliff Field was No. 4. Stoddard collected 214.9 points to win the K18.

In the J6, K18 event, Luke Anderson was second place, followed by Erik Lynch, Will Findell and Jake Barker.

Morgan Mertz was the No. 1 finisher in the girls J6 race.

Wilson said the high finishes for the Steamboat jumpers demonstrated good depth for

the team.
