Snow halts tennis match

— Ready for their biggest challenge of the season, the Steamboat Sailors girls tennis team was turned away from the courts in Loveland Saturday because of snow.

Steamboat was scheduled to play Thompson Valley at 10 a.m., but the game was canceled after it began snowing before the match.

Last week Steamboat defeated Longmont 5-2 in its first game of the season. The team fell in a scrimmage to Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins Friday.

Sailors assistant coach Carol Baily said the players put up a hard fight against the bigger school Friday.

Rocky Mountain plays in the 5A Northern League.

"They're a very tough 5A school," Baily said. "They sent nine girls to states last year. The girls all tried really hard and it's a good learning experience."

The Sailors next play a doubleheader at home against Cedaredge and Delta March 24.

The games will be played at the Tennis Center.

The projected lineup for next week is as follows: Meagan Franks (No. 1 singles), Allison Griffing (No. 2 singles) and Kim Heckbert (No. 3 singles).

In the doubles positions are Kandra Sharp and Ali Fisher (No. 1 doubles), Tara Weiss and Tiffany McGinn (No. 2 doubles), Laura Varsafsky and Sarah Davey (No. 3 doubles) and Stephanie Kammerer and Lacey Dodge (No. 4 doubles).
