Who wants to win your own stuff?

The state Department of Treasury could be your lifeline

There is no lying, Lyon Drug, you and 166 other businesses and residents in Routt County have been added to a state-wide list of unclaimed money or property held by Colorado Department of Treasury.

People may think the state says, "It's mine," to money or property that is never claimed, like the claim of Robert E. Mine, but State Deputy Treasurer Benson M. Stein said it is the state treasurer's responsibility to find the people and give it to them.

That's why the Great Colorado Payback promotional event was started in 1987. It has helped about 200,000 Coloradans claim more than $100 million in lost property and money by publishing the names of the businesses and residents in question. This year there were 45,000 claims added to a list of 800,000.

Bill Small and Gary Little of Steamboat Springs, don't think your claim will be that small or little. Stein said the highest individual claim for a person in Colorado is $95,000.

"Many of the numbers that we are speaking of are very small, but there are a number of large ones, too," Stein said.

Robert Alter may be altering his savings balance when he finds out he has a $12,725 claim, the highest in Routt County, according to the Treasurer's Office.

Along with never-closed bank accounts, unclaimed paychecks and contents from safe deposit boxes, all turned over to the state, many of the claims are dividend checks from stock certificates that the owner never left a forwarding address to receive, Stein said.

That could allow Sharon Stock to share some money from a forgotten stock if she calls for her claim.

And it won't take weeks for Kelly Weeks to receive a claim form.

"It should only take a few days to get a form to you, after you contact us," Stein said.

If Preston L. Moore Inc. has a relatively simple claim, it would be only a short time until the company could be pressing more money into its employee's pockets, once it fills out the form.

However, God forbid, if Kelly Moss has passed away, her claim may begin growing moss if her rightful heir tries to claim it. It simply takes a longer time to do, Stein said.

If you're out skiing and miss that your business or name was listed, Ski County Enterprises I, the state will hold onto the claim.

Actually, Stein explained, as of July 1, all of the money that goes unclaimed, which is worth $22 million from the 2000 fiscal year, will be kept by the treasurer indefinitely.

But rest assured if Grace Tao doesn't ever pick up her claim. The interest on the money will go to those who aren't so graceful when it comes to getting needed insurance coverage, through the Colorado Uninsurable Health Insurance Program, Stein said.

So all it takes for C.A. Hill to find out if he or she will see a hill or mountain of money, or Tanya King to know if she will be treated like a king, or if Jimmy Freeman will become a financially free man, is a call to the Colorado Department of Treasury's hot line at (800) 825-2111 or log onto the Web site at www.treasurer.state.co.us.

But before an operator fields your call, Sean Field, you may be hearing a busy signal, Stein said.

"This is our busy time of the year, and we simply don't have the staff to get every call right a way," he said.
