Local skiers fare well in Lake Placid

— Although only eight of the 13 local skiers who qualified for the Junior Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., took part in the special jumping and nordic combined events last week, the skiers who competed came away with impressive numbers.

The Junior Olympics, which started Tuesday, came to a close Saturday with the J-1 and J-2 special jumping events.

Those members of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club who opted to skip the events did so to compete in a bigger ski event or because they had previous family obligations.

On Saturday, Bryan Fletcher placed No. 3 in a J-2 special jumping event with 228.3 points.

Tommy Schwall and Logan Gerber finished in the fifth- and sixth-place spots, respectively, in a J-1 special jumping event.

Schwall had 232.5 points and Gerber ended with 212.5.

In the 7.5-kilometer nordic combined cross-country race Friday, Adam Schwall placed second after finishing 0:00:24.1 behind the first-place finisher in the J-1 class.

Ethan Johnson and Fletcher were the No. 4 and No. 5 finishers in a 5-kilometer nordic combined cross-country race in the J-2 class.

Johnson came in 0:01:41.9 behind the top finisher and Fletcher was 0:01:54.0 back from first.

On Thursday, J-1 skiers Johnson, Adam Schwall, Gerber and Tommy Schwall took first place at a team-jumping event by compiling 685 points.

Davis Miller, Fletcher, Niels Mork and Johnson were the No. 4 finishers at the J-2 team-jump event after they posted a score of 653.5.

Todd Wilson, nordic director for the Winter Sports Club, said the results were not as high as they have been in the past several years.

However, he said, those who competed in the events did very well.

"If we had our whole team there, I'm confident we would have much better results," Wilson said.
