Steamboat Springs Nite's Rest and Backdoor Sports will battle for the Senior League hockey title this Sunday night at Howelsen Hill.
The two teams won first-round playoff games and will face off in the season-ending championship contest at 6:45 p.m.
The top-seeded Nite's Rest/Winona's advanced with a 4-2 win over Alpine Oral and Facial Surgery last week. The game, however, was much closer than that score would indicate.
Nite's Rest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period behind a pair of goals from J. Wenum.
But Alpine rallied with John Lupori netting the game-tying goal early in the third period. But with four minutes left in the game, Nite's Rest player Jace Romick went to work. He netted the first goal off a rebound in front of the goal.
Alpine pulled its goalkeeper to try to gain the advantage in the final seconds, but Romick intercepted the puck, skated down the ice and slipped it into the open net with just 11 seconds remaining.
Backdoor Sports/The Skate Zone also advanced to the championship in a close game. Backdoor Sports' Chris Stillwell netted the game-winning goal, helping his team take a 3-2 playoff win from Precision Pools and Spas.
The two teams were tied at one goal each at the end of the first period. In the second, Chris Arnis scored to help Precision take a 2-1 lead.
Dave Hartley's goal in the second period tied the game at two, setting up Stillwell's third-period heroics.
Penalties gave Precision a 6-3 player advantage in the final minute of the game, but the team was unable to score.
The 2001 season is also starting to wind down for Steamboat's other adult hockey league.
Tournament play will open this Sunday with Minglewood/
Slopeside taking on Backdoor Sports/Mad Dog Hockey at 8:30 p.m. That same night, Steamboat Brewery and Tavern will face Westside Auto in the 10 p.m. game.
The playoffs will continue on March 11 with the winners playing in the championship game at 8:30 p.m. The losers will play in a consolation matchup at 10 p.m.
The regular-season champions are Minglewood/Slopeside, which finished the season with an 8-3-2 record. Steamboat Brewery and Tavern finished with a 5-5-3 record and the third-place team was Westside Auto at 5-6-2. Backdoor Sports/Mad Dog Hockey finished in the cellar at 4-8-1.
